The phrase ‘palliative care’ is new to ordinary people and doctors. Strange as it may seem, we study so many diseases but do not learn about alleviating the suffering of the dying. We do not know how to keep the human mind alive when medical science is non-responsive. When death is inevitable for the incurable people ensuring care so they do not emotionally die before departing their body, do we know this language of care to reduce their sufferings? Their sufferings of the last days are unimaginable.

We still don’t know how to emotionally keep a dying person alive from our medical textbook syllabus. Their dilapidated body, psycho-social and spiritual health can be provided care. Not only that, palliative care is important for the overall care of the patient along with those who provide care to the patient.

Then what is the position of Bangladesh?

The only constant truth in the world is birth and death. If care is needed for birth, then why not for the dying? ‘Palliative care’ is about reducing the suffering of the dying and their family. Therefore, to know ‘palliative care’ means to know for one’s own benefit, learn for their family’s benefit.

Since palliative care is relatively new, jointly organized by Palliative Care Society of Bangladesh and the Phoenix Wellness Center, Bangladesh – an 18-hour volunteer training course following World Health Organization (WHO) recommended curriculum.
