Compassionate Korail

Korail Slum – housing 1.50 thousand people, is the largest slum of Bangladesh, located in Dhaka City. This is a densely crowded area where people live under poverty with their sufferings. As perfectly reflected in the 1630’s painting “Allegory of poverty”. In 2017, Centre for Palliative Care, BSMMU started the Compassionate Korail project to improve the quality of life of elderly people in Korail slum. In an area where everyone lives below the poverty line, primary health-care seems like a luxury for them. Offering palliative care, in such an area, was a very challenging task at the beginning. The palliative care facility here is like a second home for its patients as the support they receive from the project include regular outdoor and home visits from doctors, nurses, locally trained palliative care assistants (PCA) – the primary healthcare parallel in palliative care, physiotherapy, speech therapy, eye camp, regular medicinary and monthly food packs. Compassionate Korail has become a companion for the lonely bed-bound elderlies, a pain reliever for the beggars, a place of trust, hope and a reason to smile in their down-at-heel lives.
